Today I’m going to comment on a post I saw on LinkedIn the other day – 5 things to quit right now. The post appeared on my feed and I couldn’t stop thinking about how well this was reflecting my life now versus my life just a few years back.
Here is the list:
- Trying to please everyone
- Fearing change
- Living in the past
- Putting yourself down
I think we can all reflect about at least some of the points here, but I wanted to bring my own opinion out there to see if you’re thinking the same thing – let me know if you do!
Trying to please everyone
The feeling of wanting everyone to like you is a pressure I think everyone has felt at some point in their life – I know I have, more than once.
Being a part of a world where networking and socializing is pretty much everything, you always feel the urge to kind of fit in. To fit in, you need everyone (or at least most people) to like you – to make people like you, you need to please them – or do you?
I remember one point in my life where I was focusing to much on the people that I wanted to socialize with and not the ones that I already had. I tried to fit into a new “group” or type of people – it went alright, but for a while I didn’t really feel like myself. I felt like I was a part of something that I wasn’t suppose to be a part of and that changed both my thoughts and personality. It went on for a while this situation, but thank God I came to my senses and figured out that I was perfectly fine with not everybody liking me – actually, now I prefer to have a few people disliking me, as it makes me feel like I actually can have different opinions than others.
Juniors tip for not pleasing everyone:
Stop, take a breath and realize what you already have. You probably do not need these people in your life if you need to please them to make them like you.
Change can be many things – thoughts, believes, the clothes you wear, the type of beer you drink etc. Change can be big and it can be small and I know how freaking hard and scary it is to make changes in your life – no matter the size of that change.
To give an example of myself fearing change is actually quite easy. I did it just about a year ago when I decided to quit school, move out of my apartment and move my entire life from Denmark to Dublin, Ireland – all within 2-3 weeks. It wasn’t the first time as I’ve also done this with Lisbon, Portugal a few years back and it’s not the last time I’m going to make this drastic change.
I gotta admit that I was scared the first time around when Lisbon was going to be my new home. It was the first time I’d purchased a one way ticket to a country I’d never visited – honestly I didn’t know much about Lisbon or Dublin before I moved there, I just took a chance and wanted change so bad.
Just like with point one about pleasing people, you really need to feel within yourself if this change is a change you really want to actually happen. If not, then don’t do it. Feeling your gut while doing changes is everything. I cannot stress this enough – BUT, something you gotta be scared and do something outside of your comfort zone – especially, if you like me in the past tend to be a bit too comforty in your surroundings.
Juniors tip for facing changes:
Follow your gut. Listen to what you want to do and not what everybody else wants you to do. Nobody can feel what you want but you.
Living in the past
“Don’t judge yourself by your past. You don’t live there anymore.” – Unknown
It’s pretty easy to live in the past. To live life on what has already happened. I’ve done it and I think a lot of you guys has as well, especially when/if you’ve done something great or special earlier on in life. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with reminiscing great times from your past. Be proud of what you did, but make sure you don’t live your life on that.
If you did something you liked, then do more of it instead of living in the past.
Juniors tip for not living in the past:
Remember and reminisce, do more of it if you enjoyed it. Talking about what has happened is good, but creating new memories/experiences is important.
Putting yourself down
I’m not going to say anything here except for this picture. This is the picture I have as a screensaver on my laptop. It says it all and I couldn’t say it any better.
Juniors tip for not putting yourself down:
Read what the picture says.
This is probably the most dangerous one of all if you ask me. Overthinking even the smallest issues can cause major problems mentally.
Just like facing your fears, feel your gut. That gut feeling has helped me more times than I can count. If something feels right, then you do it – if not, then stay away or at least think twice (without overthinking of course ;)).
At some point in your life you’re going to have to make some sort of major decision about yourself. If you keep procrastinating or skipping these decisions you’re going to get stuck in life. Overthinking can cause you procrastinating issues, decisions or anything else really.
Juniors tip for not overthinking:
Don’t always jump to fast conclusions as they can hit hard you as well (trust me I know).. But make sure you deal with the issue when it’s there and everything will be alright.
